Until now, the domestic customer has faced a compromise - an often difficult choice between limited supplies of extremely pure water, or adequate supplies of not-quite-so-pure water. Distillation can be a rather fiddly batch process, limited to producing a couple of gallons a day of very pure water. Reverse osmosis is in practice much more convenient, large volumes of purified water being drawn from a dedicated tap at the point of use.
